Orthorexia Nervosa: When healthy eating gets out of control

Author: Professor Joyce Harper

GWC health eatingThe term was coined in 1996 by Dr Steven Bratman.  It is an unhealthy obsession with eating foods that one considers healthy, to such a degree that the person avoids foods that they think will be harmful. This can start off as a healthy ideal but becomes problematic when it turns into an obsession. The person can restrict their food choices so much that their health can suffer. This unhealthy obsessive compulsive behaviour can lead to an unhealthy condition or lifestyle.

Many people affected by this are also exercise enthusiasts who may take exercise to an unhealthy level.
