Toxic Shock Syndrome(TSS) is caused by the contamination of the bloodstream by bacteria which are usually harmlessly present on the skin, mouth and nose. When the bacteria enters the bloodstream it is toxic and can damage tissue and internal organs. Cases of TSS are most common in menstruating women who use tampons. It is unsure how the tampons contribute to the onset of TSS, but it is thought that the tampon material provides the ideal breeding ground for the bacteria which is easily transferred from the skin when it is inserted into the vagina. The Daily Mail reports today of a girl who narrowly escaped multiple organ failure when she accidently forgot to take a tampon out during exam stress, and instead inserted a new one in. She had symptoms of dizziness, bloating and mottled skin before being admitted to hospital.
