It can have a profound affect for many women
Does your period affect your day?
Author: Professor Joyce Harper
Almost every women will have a period approximately every four weeks from her teenage years until she reaches her 50’s. During this time her life will be controlled by her menstrual cycle. Before her period she may feel bloated and have premenstrual tension. During her period she may experience period pains and have to deal with menstrual blood. And the two weeks in between she will either be avoiding or trying to get pregnant as it will be her most fertile time.
During these years, each month the hormones progesterone and estrogen will go up and down, giving almost every woman mood swings. And periods can be very painful. I have an old obstetric and gynaecology book from the late 1800s and it says that during her period – women should stay inside and not go to balls!!
For many women – they are so affected by their periods that they have to take time off work.
I did not realise how much I was affected by my menstrual cycle until I went through the menopause and it felt like a cloud had been lifted from my brain. I realised the negative effect PMT had had on my life for the last 40 years. I wanted to apologise to my friends and colleagues for being so crazy half the time!!
