Women who suffer from type I diabetes are twice as likely to develop an eating disorder

The specialist charity ‘Diabetics with Eating Disorders’ has warned that more attention should be given to women with type I diabetes, who researchers say are twice as likely to develop an eating disorder such as anorexia or bulimia. Researchers have also said that 40% of sufferers aged 15-40 skip their insulin jabs in order to lose or maintain their weight. The charity has claimed that GPs are often dismissive of ‘diabulimia’, the dual condition which in it’s worst cases can result in death as highlighted by the story of Lisa Day. Lisa (pictured) was a 27 year old student nurse who regularly skipped her insulin jabs in order to become slimmer and unfortunately passed away after developing diabetic ketoacidosis.
