Are you competitive?
Author: Professor Joyce Harper
I am making some sweeping generalizations in this post to get the discussion going.
Some people would say that women are less competitive than men. This may have been true 20 years ago when we were not given so many opportunities but I am not sure if this is the case in 2016.
But do we still teach our children gender differences in competition? Is healthy competition and confidence encouraged in boys but seen as undesirable traits in girls?
When a boy wins a competition, they may be less likely to be worried about the feelings of their opposition. But generally girls are more empathic than men, which may cause them to feel bad for their opposition.
Is this a good or bad thing? Should a women be competitive?
