Author: Professor Joyce Harper
Women are starting to make a difference in male dominated sports.
Jennie Finch is an American, former collegiate All-American, right-handed softball pitcher and first baseman originally from La Mirada, California.
She played for the University of Arizona from 1999 – 2002 and in 2001 led the team to win the World College Women’s Series.
She went on to lead the US women’s softball team who won gold in the 2004 Olympics and silver in 2008. She retired professionally in 2012 after playing for the Chicago Bandits.
This Sunday she becomes the first women to coach a professional baseball team when she takes the lead for the Bridgeport Bluefish.
“We are really excited to have Jennie come out and manage the team,” Bluefish General Manager Jamie Toole said in a statement. “She is an incredible athlete and a wonderful person, and we hope our fans will enjoy seeing her in a Bluefish uniform for the day.”
