In order to spread awareness and engage global governments to actively stop human trafficking in their respective countries, the United States releases an annual ‘Trafficking In Persons’ (TIP) report detailing the actions that 190 governments around the world have taken.
This year’s TIP report was released a couple of weeks ago, and has caused controversy over its findings. Countries are ranked in tiers, with tier 3 being the worst in its efforts to abolish human trafficking and tier 1 being the best.
Certain countries which were previously in lower tiers moved up a tier this year, one of which being Thailand. Though the TIP moved Thailand from tier 3 to tier 2, many human rights groups have criticised the reports and drawn attention to the huge problem of human trafficking and slave labour in the seafood sector. It is thought that the move from tier 3 to 2 was a strategic move based on political interests.
Other countries which moved from tier 3 to 2 include Cambodia, Egypt and Namibia. A tier 2 country meets the minimum efforts required to fight trafficking. The countries which moved down a tier to tier 3 include Haiti, Myanmar, Sudan and Papua New Guinea. There are 27 countries in Tier 3 in total.
Cyprus, Colombia and the Phillipines moved from tier 2 to tier 1, and were praised on their efforts to increase awareness and convictions for online child sex trafficking.
