A new law has been proposed to the German government where women will be required to name the biological father of a child at the request of the partner who is paying child support, therefore forcing them reveal if the child was conceived through an act of adultery or infidelity.
It has been referred to as the ‘Cuckoo Kids’ Law’ by Germans which comes from the phrase ‘kuckuckskindern’ i.e. children that have been conceived through adultery.
The proposed legislation has understandably outraged many people and has been cited as an act of slut-shaming, however it has been stated by justice minister Heiko Maas that the intention of the law is to protect men who are not the true biological father of a child from having to pay child support.
It is unknown whether women would be penalised for refusing to name the biological father however it has been written that it is ‘permissable’ for women to stay silent where it would be ‘unconscionable’ to do otherwise.
What do you think of this law? Is it necessary to protect men who may be paying child support for a child that isn’t biologically theirs or do you consider this a breach of womens’ rights and privacy?
