Mediterranean diet associated with better sperm quality
Author: Dr Elena Kontogianni
Greater adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) is significantly associated with higher sperm concentration, total sperm count and sperm motility, according to a new study published in Human Reproduction.
It is known that dietary patterns characterized by high intakes of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish and low intake of meat are associated with better semen quality.
225 men from subfertile couples attempting fertility in Athens, Greece, participated in the new study that was designed to evaluate the influence of habitual dietary intake and lifestyle on fertility outcomes.
The results of the study suggest that greater compliance to the MedDiet may help improve semen quality, but whether this translates into differences in male fertility remains to be clarified.
