A 24-year-old woman has given birth after her fertility was restored by implanting ovary tissue taken when she was 9 years old.
Moaza Al Matrooshi, from Dubai, is thought to be the first woman in the world to have a baby after having an ovary frozen before puberty.
Moaza Al Matrooshi was born with beta thalassaemia, an inherited blood disorder that can be fatal. She needed chemotherapy (which damages the ovaries) before receiving a bone marrow transplant from her brother. Before chemotherapy she had her right ovary removed in an operation in Leeds, where the tissue was frozen.
The ovary remained frozen until last year when specialists sent it to Denmark, where surgeons transplanted five slivers of the ovarian tissue back into her body. Four were stitched on to her failed left ovary and one on to the side of her uterus. After the transplant, her hormone levels began returning to normal, she began ovulating and fertility was restored.
The patient and her husband then underwent IVF to increase their chances of pregnancy and a few days ago her son was delivered at Portland Hospital.
The treatment gives hope to other young women who are unable to conceive because their reproductive organs have been damaged by treatment for cancer and other diseases.
