Vitamin D supplementation appeared to have a protective effect against acute respiratory tract infections, especially among those who are very vitamin D deficient.

A strong protective effect was seen among patients with baseline vitamin D deficiency (less than 25 nmol/L).
The researchers concluded that public health measures to improve vitamin D status, should be introduced, particularly in settings where profound vitamin D deficiency is common.
