About Us
Our Vision
Our vision is to be an interactive community where people can learn about and discuss issues that affect women’s health across the world. We will be reporting on the stories in the media and also posting a discussion of the day. Once you have registered, you can comment on these discussions. We also want to hear stories and experiences from women around the world and the ‘Your Discussions’ section is a place for anyone registered with Global Women Connected to write their views, comments and questions so that others can reply and actively discuss. The web site also provides information and links on topics concerning women’s health; from puberty to the menopause, as well as regular Vlogs and Blogs. We are also setting up ‘support groups’ where we can discuss specific topics, such as fertility and the menopause. The long-term goal is for the web site to be translated into different languages and to provide face-to-face events for active discussion and interaction with local communities.
Joyce Harper, Founder of Global Women Connected, started working in IVF in 1987 as a clinical embryologist, and helped many thousands of couples become pregnant. She was aware that her friends knew little about women’s health issues, such as fertility and contraception and had planned to write a book on the topic. Through her teaching roles over the last 20 years she has heard many stories from around the world concerning women’s health and decided that we needed a place to share stories, learn, discuss and increase awareness. Early in 2015, Joyce held three brainstorming sessions to hear what others thought about her idea. One key thing she learnt was that issues that she thought were country specific, in fact affected women across the world, such as female genital mutilation and the selection of male pregnancies over female. This led Joyce to set up Global Women Connected. From the beginning she asked five friends to come on board; Elena Kontogianni, Laura Spoelstra, Helen O’Neill, Keeley Monsen and Tharni Vasavan. Joyce is currently writing a book – what every woman should know.
